Downtown Henderson Water Street District
The Historical Heart of Henderson, Nevada
Henderson, Nevada is currently Nevada’s second largest city… but where did it all begin? Henderson (and Southern Nevada, for that matter) began as a temporary town site at Water Street District. Originally, a plant that made Basic Magnesium was built, which created munitions for World War II. After the war was won, half of the town left. The plant was put up for sale by the United States War Asset Administration as surplus property. At that time, state legislature intervened and purchased the industrial sites, which essentially saved the town. The City of Henderson was officially incorporated on April 16th, 1953. Henderson originally started at a size of about 13 square miles, and currently it is now the second largest city in Nevada (after Las Vegas) and comes in at about 103 square miles. Water Street District is the heart of the city, where it all began. Are you a history buff? The Henderson Historical Society offers Historic Walking Tours if you’d like to learn more about the roots of the city.
